Standing adjacent to the San Diego Bay and the Bayshore Bikeway, Bikeway Village repurposes two nondescript concrete masonry warehouses—totaling almost 30,000 square feet—as an alternative retail center with a focus on fitness and outdoor activities. Upon completion, the center's features may ultimately include bicycle service and sales, a cold brew coffee shop, a fitness studio, a craft brewery, indoor and outdoor dining, and a bicycling-oriented hostel.
In designing the project, Studio E Architects seeks to bring the Bay to the City through material selection, detailing, and landscape design, capturing views and improving public access; to create a shared amenity that benefits bicyclists, strollers, birdwatchers, and retail patrons alike; and, in the process, to create a model of sustainable redevelopment.
