Part of our ongoing commitment to the profession is nurturing the next generation of Architects. We believe in the importance of mentorship as an essential component of success, and that’s why today we’re highlighting ACE Mentor, a national non-profit organization aimed to expose high school students to the architecture, construction and engineering industries. The ACE Mentor program is currently present in 12 schools throughout San Diego, with several other affiliates nationwide, creating a wide network of support for the next generation.
The ACE Mentor Program is driven by the committed and enthusiastic participation of volunteer mentors who are practicing professionals in their respective field. Mentors and students meet after school twice a month to develop a project of their choice or participate in the ACE National Design Competition. The program mimics real-world projects and an integrated project team approach. Past projects have ranged from the redevelopment of San Diego’s waterfront, to adaptive reuse for Qualcomm stadium, to a Ninja Training Academy!
Additionally, ACE Mentor awards scholarships to Juniors and Seniors who intend to pursue a college degree in an “ACE” field of study. San Diego is one of the Nation’s top-ranking ACE affiliates for scholarship awards; last year alone, there was over $100,000 in Scholarships awarded to San Diego ACE students. Studio E is proud to have donated to the 2018 ACE Scholarship fund.
We’re lucky to have our very own star mentor among our team, Kirsten Blakeman, who initiated the ACE Mentoring program at e3 Civic High in 2014 and was team leader from 2014 to 2018. This year, she joined the San Diego ACE Board as co-chair of the Education Committee and Board Liason to e3 Civic High, continuing her ongoing support and invaluable dedication in this new leadership role.
If you work in the Architecture, Construction or Engineering fields and are interested becoming a Mentor for the upcoming 2018-2019 School year, you are invited to attend the 2018 ACE Mentor Mixer coming up this Thursday, August 23rd. RSVP below:
