Schiefer + Sons

San Diego, CA

Sitting just beyond Petco Park's outfield fence, the historic Schiefer & Sons building is located amongst new office and residential high-rises around a new public park in the warehouse district. Originally constructed in 1910, Schiefer & Sons has since been home to a showcase manufacturer, a parachute company, and an architecture firm. As part of the development of the Park at the Park, Studio E Architects adapted this three-story brick and heavy timber building into retail space, restaurant space, and office suites. This adaptive reuse included the restoration of the historic building’s north and west facades, the cleaning and preservation of brick and wood interior surfaces, and the addition of steel moment frames— providing seismic stability while maintaining interior character. The project’s primary visual feature is a new steel balcony system, providing access to private porches and offices. Significant new south-facing openings feature overhead-acting glass doors which open onto the porches, bringing the ballpark experience into the building. These balconies culminate in a sculptural steel stair wrapping a dramatically-illuminated glass wall.
