Located at a key intersection within the East Village, 17th and Commercial Apartments is a 109-unit project intended to provide permanent supportive housing for formerly homeless individuals. The building is comprised of studios and one-bedroom units that include all the necessary amenities for a comfortable transition, as well as common spaces that aim to inspire and re-energize. Residents will be able to enjoy a common flexible room at ground level, as well as two shared open spaces; one at Level 2 that includes a calming landscape design, and a second space at Level 8 that promotes a sense of wonder through the play of light and shade created by a curved perforated metal trellis. The façade design responds to the specific environment in which it sits, seeking to strengthen, or mitigate the context directly around it. The south and west facades are envisioned as a play of volumes that open up and respond directly to the street environment, while the north and east facades, seek to reduce the noise pollution along the trolley tracks and the freeway, via a playful articulation of metal panels and limited openings.
