THE
LEAH RESIDENCE Modeled after traditional small urban
hotels, Leah's Residence offers safe, secure and affordable housing for homeless
and abused women. Twenty-four furnished units are arranged on three levels above
a ground floor lobby, lounge and social service center. A brightly landscaped
courtyard at the heart of the site creates a surprising oasis of protected outdoor
open space for the use of the residents. Parking for the social service staff
is located in a below grade garage. Bay windows lean out over the street affording
glimpses of the new Ballpark Neighborhood and the Historic Gaslamp District. A
second floor outdoor terrace, vending lounge, and a central laundry room provide
the residents with places for gathering and socializing. The project makes the
most of its postage-stamp lot of a mere 8,800 square feet. Photography
