1660 India Street is the renovation of an
existing 10,000 sf, 2-story, commercial building in the Little Italy District
of Downtown San Diego.
In relating to the neighborhood context, the design
responds to the corner site condition by creating a "display box" at
the second level and corner-oriented glazing at the first level. In addition,
exterior color and materials are introduced to harmonize with the Little Italy
palette.
Integration of the exterior with interior space planning concepts
are accomplished by opening up the existing facade to bring in natural light and
reinforce the visual connection of outside and inside space. A grand stair is
inserted to strengthen the relationship of the second level commercial spaces
to the pedestrian level of India Street.
