CANDY FACTORY-SCHIEFER & SONS
San Diego, CA
The Schiefer & Sons and Candy Factory buildings sit beyond the outfield fence at San Diego's new downtown ballpark. Originally constructed in 1910 and 1924 respectively, the structures have been home to a showcase manufacturer, a parachute company and a sweets maker. As part of the development of Park at the Park, Studio E adapted the three-story brick and heavy timber buildings to retail or restaurant space on its street levels and office suites on its upper levels.
The adaptive reuse included restoration of the historic buildings' north facades, cleaning and preservation of brick and wood interior surfaces, and adding steel moment frames to provide seismic stability while maintaining the interior character. A new steel balcony system provides access to private porches and offices and offers dramatic views into the ballpark - culminating in a sculptural steel stair wrapping a dramatically illuminated glass wall.
