Founded in 1986, Studio E Architects is a thirteen-person collaborative led by two principals, Eric Naslund, and John Sheehan.

Based in San Diego, California, the firm works throughout the Southwestern United States and has built a varied body of work ranging from private residences to affordable housing, mixed-use, civic, and urban planning projects. The firm has received numerous design awards, including three National American Institute of Architects Honor Awards. The California Council of the American Institute of Architects named Studio E one of California's Emerging Talents in 1999. Studio E's collaborative approach extends to its successful use of client and community workshops in the design process. The work of the office is noted for its understanding of place, its authenticity and its inventive optimism.

Eric Naslund

ERIC NASLUND, FAIA

Principal

Eric began his architectural career in 1983 after graduating with honors from Cal Poly, San Luis Obispo but his fascination with design and building can be traced all the way back to kindergarten where his teacher remarked on his progress report that Eric excels at art and construction toys. His formal education also includes a stint at the Écoles d'Art Américaines in Fontainbleau, France, where he was recognized with a Mention Bien Prize. Being an Air Force brat, Eric has lived all over the country and was born in Madrid, Spain.

Eric has been a licensed architect in California since 1986 and is also licensed in New Mexico and Utah. He has taught frequently, most recently as the Kea Distinguished Professor at the University of Maryland in 2008. He has served on the San Diego Planning Commission since 2006 and has been the Chair since 2009. Eric was elevated to Fellow in the American Institute of Architects in 2004.

When not at Studio E, Eric enjoys spending time with his family and friends, going to the beach, playing golf or riding bikes. His lacrosse playing days long over, Eric still enjoys catching a game when possible.

John Sheehan No Frame

JOHN SHEEHAN

Principal

John is a native of the Golden State, born in San Francisco in 1960. He received a Bachelor of Architecture from California Polytechnic State University, San Luis Obispo in 1984 and in 1986 he pursued a Graduate Design Diploma from the Architectural Association in London, England. John worked at various offices in Boston before moving to San Diego in 1989 to join his former Cal Poly classmate Eric Naslund at Studio E Architects.

He and his partner have shaped the firms optimistic, place-specific and people-oriented design sensibility, garnering scores of national and local design awards. John has lectured at USC, Woodbury University, San Diegos New School of Architecture and the Monterey Design Conference. He is a frequent speaker at housing design conferences.

John has a keen interest in history and travel. His design work seeks to connect people to their surroundings and to make the everyday seem extraordinary. Afterhours, John enjoys sailing, kayaking, good food, laughter and spending time with his wife and three children.

Kacie Watt No Frame

KACIE WATT

Associate

Kacie is a Southern California native. Playing competitive sports growing up, she had the pleasure of travelling throughout the region to compete. Her hobbies include playing shortstop on the Studio E softball team, reading, cooking, and creating softball statistics spreadsheets with Microsoft Excel. She moved to San Diego from Los Angeles to attend college and graduated with a Bachelor of Science degree in Accountancy from University of Phoenix.

Kacie joined the Studio E team in 2004 as office manager and has enjoyed the camaraderie she has experienced at the firm. Her responsibilities vary from accounting to human resources. She is a member of the San Diego Chapter of the Society for Design Administration, joining the Chapters Board of Directors in 2009. Prior to her employment with Studio E, she worked as a production assistant in the entertainment industry.

Gavin Wilson

GAVIN WILSON

Gavin joined Studio E Architects in 2005, after graduating with a Bachelor of Architecture from Woodbury University in San Diego. In his time with the firm, he has worked on a wide variety of projects, ranging from custom homes to multi-family, mixed-use and educational projects.

While growing up, he was lucky enough to live in National Parks around the nation, including the Everglades and Yosemite. These experiences instilled a great appreciation for the natural environment and provided the chance to explore the different regions of the country. When not working, Gavin enjoys spending time with his family, snowboarding as much as possible, and is attempting to conquer his never-ending list of DIY home remodeling tasks.

Kevin Nivinskus

KEVIN NIVINSKUS

I first realized an interest in architecture when I was in elementary school. While other kids were playing with GI Joe, I was tinkering in the garage, building wooden games, engineering go-karts or imagining what the next block of wood might become. I pursued this dream by graduating from California State Polytechnic University, Pomona in 1993 with a year abroad at the university in Florence, Italy.

Throughout my professional journey, I have worked on many great projects, but I am realizing that one of the most important things in the profession is relationships (enjoying them, managing them, nourishing them). Buildings will decay, but relationships can remain forever. It was relationships that drew me to Studio E in 2001, and it is relationships that continue to motivate me to excellence in life and the profession. My favorite relationships are my wife Stephanie, and my children Joshua, Josiah and Ella.

While architecture is a passion of my life, I also have an overarching passion for pursuing God and also enjoy playing guitar, dabbling in piano and playing soccer whenever I have a chance.

Tilly Whitehead No Frame

TILLY WHITEHEAD

Tilly graduated from NewSchool of Architecture + Design in 2006 with a Master of Architecture degree, and the academic honor Cum Laude. After five years of experience working on various project types and sizes at other local firms, Tilly joined Studio E Architects in June 2007.

Tilly was born in San Diego, grew up on the Central Coast of California, and rolling hills, oak trees and the ocean are in her blood. Her vacation time is often spent in Morro Bay and Borrego Springs.

Interests include reading fiction, crochet, yoga and strolling farmers markets. Tilly also teaches design as an adjunct professor at San Diego State University and volunteers for San Diego Architecture Foundations Orchids & Onions award ceremonies.

Maxine Ward No Frame

MAXINE WARD

Architect & LEED AP

Born and raised on a dairy farm in Northern Ireland, Maxine left the farm for the big city to study architecture at Edinburgh College of Art, Scotland. In 1994 she was awarded a scholarship to the University of Kansas, beginning her American adventure.

A licensed architect in California and the United Kingdom, Maxine has been practicing architecture in San Diego since 2003, focusing on affordable multi-family and public projects. In addition to her professional work, Maxine is an adjunct faculty member at the NewSchool of Architecture and Design, San Diego, where she leads a graduate level design studio.

She is an active member of the San Diego architectural community, serving as a board member of the San Diego Architectural Foundation and two-time chair of the Orchids & Onions design awards program.

As a brand-new parent, Maxine has her hands full even when she is not at work. She enjoys urban strolls around her home in Little Italy with husband, baby and dog, going from coffee shop to gelato shop to the park. When a faster pace is required, she speeds around town on her scooter.

Katherine Casaneda

KATHERINE CASTAÑEDA

A native of Colombia, South America, Katherine moved to Los Angeles with her parents when she was 16 years old. Inspired by Colombia's cultural richness and art, she took an interest in design from an early age. She later attended California Polytechnic State University, San Luis Obispo where she earned a Bachelor of Architecture degree and focused on sustainable environments. While in school, Katherine enjoyed participating in Vellum furniture design shows, and had the opportunity to complete two internships with Mack Architects.

In 2006 she spent a year in Italy where she participated in various interdisciplinary studios and traveled all over Europe, which further fueled her passion for art, culture and languages.

Katherine moved to San Diego in late 2008 and shortly afterwards joined Studio E. When not in the office, some of her hobbies include painting, sculpting, and a more recent interest in graphic and web design. She can often be found obsessing over her beagle, Neni, and enjoying electronic music around San Diego with her friends.

Ana Cecilia Castro

KATIE HAINES

LEED AP

Katie was born in South Africa, but grew up in a small beach town in Australia amongst koalas in her backyard and all sorts of dangerous creatures in the ocean. With an architect father, she discovered a love for spaces, materials and color at a very young age. A passion for culture, community and vernacular architecture was formed while on a Rotary exchange year in Brazil and various surf trips to Mexico.

Katie graduated from a Bachelor of Architecture from the University of Queensland in Brisbane in 2007, where she focused on sustainability and urban design. Soon after, she moved to the U.S. to follow a boy from California. She lived in San Francisco for 3 years, working in architecture and solar design. In mid-2011, Katie settled in her husbands native San Diego and shortly after joined the team at Studio E.

When not in the office, Katie enjoys surfing various waves around San Diego County, practicing yoga at her local North Park studio, pottering around in her veggie garden, cooking and eating, and hanging out with her very large, extended family-in-law.

Jorge Mata No Frame

JORGE MATA

While a student at Woodbury University San Diego, Jorge participated in the summer 2006 Over the Pole Study Abroad Design Studio which gave him the opportunity to explore Paris, Shanghai, Nanjing, Beijing, and Suzhou. These cities gave him a deeper appreciation for Mexican food, being that none of the mentioned cities offered any.

Jorge graduated from Woodbury with a Bachelor of Architecture in 2007 and shortly afterward joined Studio E Architects. When Jorge isnt reading books regarding the origins of the universe, hes performing standup comedy at various clubs in San Diego and Los Angeles. His other hobbies include playing either the acoustic or electric guitar while listening to Radiohead. And on Sundays, Jorge enjoys going to his home church, The Movement, in San Marcos.

Josh Hoffman No Frame

JOSH HOFFMAN

A Northern California native, Josh attended the University of California, San Diego, earning a Bachelor of Arts in Urban Studies & Planning with a minor in Literature in 2002. In 2005, he graduated from the Newschool of Architecture and Design, receiving a Master of Architecture degree. Since then, Josh has held down the hot-corner for the Studio E softball team while working on completing the requirements for licensure and awaiting his call-up to the show.

When not scouring thrift stores for old records, cruising the streets of South Park in an old Ford with his wife, or getting lost in the jukeboxes of San Diego's finest dives with his brothers, Joshs list of patron causes includes learning the art of tug-o-war with Buckminster & Penelopehis Boston Terriers, expending massive amounts of psychic energy to will the Oakland As to World Series glory, and attempting to channel the guitar stylings of Charlie Christian, Keith Richards, and Tom Verlaine into a coherent sonic language. All are works in progress.
